FAQs

Q?What is bibimbap?

A. Bibimbap is a signature Korean dish. The word literally means “mixed meal” or “mixed rice”. Bibimbap is served as a bowl of warm white or brown rice topped with namul (sautéed and seasoned vegetables) and gochujang (chili pepper paste). A raw or fried egg and sliced meat (usually beef) are common additions. The ingredients are stirred together thoroughly just before eating. It can be served either cold or hot.

A variation of this dish, dolsot bibimbap (돌솥 비빔밥, dolsot meaning “stone pot”), is served in a very hot stone bowl in which a raw egg is cooked against the sides of the bowl. The bowl is so hot that anything that touches it sizzles for minutes. Before the rice is placed in the bowl, the bottom of the bowl is coated with sesame oil, making the layer of the rice touching the bowl golden brown and crisp.

Q? Is it true that bibimbap is prepared gluten free?A.

Yes. It’s true. Most bibimbap recipes are gluten free! Bibimbap is a traditional Korean dish that combines a rice (brown or white), your choice of vegetables, a protein (beef, chicken, or tofu), and topped with chili paste and sesame oil. It typically includes a raw egg and is served in a hot stone pot (which cooks the egg). If you choose the tofu, and omit the egg then you also have it served as a vegan meal.

Q ?Is Korean food spicy?

A.While many Korean favorites are deliciously spicy and flavorful, the great thing about Pick & Mix is that you can have your dish prepared just as spicy as you would like. Prefer it on the mild side? Consider a teriyaki or soy sauce instead of the hot chili paste.

Q?What is bulgogi?A.

Bulgogi is made from thin slices of sirloin or other prime cuts of beef. Before cooking, the meat is marinated to enhance its flavor and tenderness with a mixture of soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic, pepper and other ingredients such as scallions, onions or mushrooms, especially white button mushrooms or shiitake. Sometimes, cellophane noodles are added to the dish, which varies by region and specific recipe.

Bulgogi is traditionally grilled, but pan-cooking is common as well. Whole cloves of garlic, sliced onions and chopped green peppers are often grilled or fried with the meat. This dish is sometimes served with a side of lettuce or other leafy vegetable, which is used to wrap a slice of cooked meat, often along with a dab ofssamjang, or other side dishes, and then eaten as a whole.
